Birthdays
Perhaps it's time I told the story of my birthday. It's really quite an interesting story that a lot of people find very amusing, but I find the situation quite ordinary. Well then maybe it's just me. I've been lazy long enough now and this rant has been postponed enough times now. My birthday was about two and a half weeks ago now, on October 24th. Yes I have delayed this rant for that long now. Anyways moving on with the story...
Although my birthday was on October 24th, the story really begins on the Sunday of that week October 21st. For the entire month of October I had almost completely forgotten about the existence of my birthday. That is until that day when my father mentioned how my birthday was coming up that week. So he suggested that we eat out next week to celebrate my birthday. That suddenly reminded me of my birthday but then I quickly forgot again.
That is until Wednesday. Now Wednesday was a very interesting day. First of all, it was my birthday. However I had yet to realize that. Second, there was only a half day at school. Once a term there is a huge conference of all the teachers and faculty at my school that requires half of a full school day to carry out. That day was chosen to be Wednesday. Of course since all the teachers would be talking to each other, they couldn't have also been teaching all us students at the same time. Therefore us students got half a day off.
In celebration of this half, my friends and I went down to the Park to play a game of football. Originally it was probably just 5 of us or so. However so many people wound up being invited that week and even along the way as we walked down to the park, that we wound up with a massive party of twenty. That number even increased to 22 as the day went on. So then we played football for about two or three hours. During this entire time a lot of crap happened that I really do not want to go into. Anyways it's not like you want to hear it in the first place. Some people left, someone got injured, yadda yadda yadda. During this entire time, I also continued to remain oblivious to the fact that it was my birthday.
Now after those two hours of football my friends and I went to our buddy Max's house. There were only seven of us now. Most people left to their own respective houses. Originally it was planned that we go see Iron Monkey after playing football. However the plans were changed due to our dirtiness. Really we were a horrendous mess, I don't even want to think about it. So instead of going to see Iron Monkey, we just played around with a football and a frisbee in the street for a while. That and we had Jordan Lee show us his mad break dancing skillz and me demonstrating my incredible ability to make an ass of myself by attempting to immitate Jordan.
After two hours of that, Jordan's mom finally came to pick us up. So four of us got in his car to go home. Once in his car, a certain Henry made one of the most random dumbass comments I have ever heard in my life. He looked at the inspection tag on the lower right-hand corner of Jordan's car window and said, "Hey! The next time you'll have to get your car inspected will be on the month of myu birthday." Now I won't even get into how stupid of a comment that was simply because that would be an altogether different rant. However that massively asinine comment did provoke a reaction in my head. I startred thinking birthday... birthday... my birthday... October 24th... today! And that's when it came to me. It was already 4PM, most of my friends were already gone and I had finally realized it was my birthday.
And so that's pretty much the whole story. I had forgotten my own birthday. For the next two days of school my friend Vinny, who was in the car when I realized it was my birthday, told everyone he knew that I had forgotten my own birthday. It was actually rather irritating since so many people, many I didn't even know very well, found out that I had forgotten my own birthday. And a lot of people thought it was really really weird...
Of course I really don't understand why people found the fact that I forogt my birthday to be weird. I find nothing wrong with it. I mean a birthday is so insignificant. It's really only important to the person who has that birthday since it commemorates their... well... birthday. To everyone else in the world it's completely meaningless. It's really only important to the few people who have that birthday. Basically what I'm saying is that seeing one's birthday to be so important is so damn egocentric. To care about one's birthday so much is just saying that you think about yourself so damn much. If you ask me, it's just one insignificant day out of 365 and sometimes 366.
Which then brings up my friend Colin. His birthday is actually the day after mine however he was born a year before me. You see I enterred school a year early. I'm a tenth grader with a birthday after September born in '86 whereas most people of the same birthmonth range and grade were born in '85. Anyways Colin was basically reminding everyone he saw since the beginning of October, that his birthday was coming up. To be honest, and with full complete offense to Colin, I find that to be sickening. It's like saying, "Ooh! Ooh! Look at me! Look at me!" as I keep on saying, it's egocentric.
I still don't get why people made such a big deal about me forgetting my birthday. Tons of people everyday forget their own birthday. Especially older people who have already had tons of birthdays before. My parents forget their birthdays all the time and time probably flies by my grandfather so fast that he probably feels like he has a birthday every month. Birthdays are just that insignificant.
Now you may now be wondering what I got for my birthday. All Ig to was a new school bag and a dinner at Applebys. Of course being a materialistic American your mouth is probably gaping open in complete astonishment. Most people would probably feel a huge outrage of getting so little for their birthday. But I really don't feel bad about it at all. Now if I were getting married or graduating, then I'd be pissed. However as I keep onsaying over and over again, birthdays are just so insignificant. Infact I almost feel lucky to be getting the new schoolbag, which I really like by the way. On birthdays you're getting gifts and presents over one day of the year that has already come several times in your life. You're getting rewarded for doing absolutely jack other than being born. I hardly see being born to be much of an achievement to celebrate and reward. Infact in all logic, the child should be giuving their parents gifts on their birthday.
Well anyways that's all I have to say about birthdays. In retrospect, that's actually quite a lot of writing. I'm almost tempted to make this rant a fully featured rant. However due to the temporal dependencies of this rant, I'll keep it a Daily Rant. Anyways in conclusion... Birthdays are very insignificant and caring about them is just egocentric. You're being rewarded for the effortless task of being born. Whoopdeedoo.
